Most diabetics find themselves needing to take insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls the level of blood sugar in your body. People with diabetes don't have enough insulin or may not be able to use it properly.
All people with type 1 diabetes, and most people with type 2, need to take insulin to help control their blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes means your body doesn't make any insulin. Type 2 diabetes means your body either doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use it
The goal of taking insulin is to keep your blood sugar level in a normal range as much as possible so you stay healthy. Over time, high blood sugar levels can cause serious health problems, such as blindness and kidney failure. Unfortunately, insulin can't be taken by mouth. It's usually taken as shots. It can also be taken by pump.
If you take insulin regularly, or someone you know does, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just issued a
serious warning: stolen vials of the long-acting insulin "Levemir" made by Novo Nordisk Inc. may be on the market.
serious warning: stolen vials of the long-acting insulin "Levemir" made by Novo Nordisk Inc. may be on the market.
The danger is that the stolen insulin was not stored and handled properly and may be harmful for people to use. The FDA has received numerous reports of patients who suffered a reaction due to poor control of glucose levels after using a vial from one of the stolen lots.
The FDA first alerted the public to the theft in June, when it reported that three lots of Levemir, totaling 129,000 vials, had been stolen in North Carolina. So far, however, only about two percent of the total amount stolen has been recovered.
