Diet for Healthy Joints

Osteoarthritis is a severe and painful joint abnormality that involves degradation of joints. It generally occurs in old age and shows symptoms like joint pain, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, effusion and may even lead to locking. It makes life completely troublesome as performing routine activities like walking or standing becomes difficult. Moreover, there is no permanent cure for it. Thus it is necessary that you take care of it right from the start. Diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and pain medications serve as the ways for treatment of this degenerative joint condition.
Generally, people diagnosed with this condition depend immensely on pain medications. However, these medications only help in lowering the discomfort of poor joint health and do not better the condition significantly alone. The main thing that can enormously improve your joint health is the diet you take. Depend amply on fresh fruits and vegetables. They are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that effectively fight the inflammatory effects of free radicals. Also the dietary carotenoid, especially found in green vegetables, tomatoes, orange and carrots helps in slowing down the joint degradation activity. Even foods rich in lipids like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are very beneficial. They may help energize the body cells and bring about specific chemical reactions that help reduce the inflammation of joints. Oily fish like sardine, salmon and mackerel are rich in these fatty acids. You must include fiber-rich foods in your diet as they help in the process of digestion and also withstand the side-effects of medications. Adding herbs like ginger, turmeric and garlic while cooking helps a lot due to their medical properties. In addition, drink lots of water as it serves in the removal of toxins from the body and keeps you hydrated.
When it comes to the foods that must be avoided, the food rich in fats, especially hydrogenated oil and polyunsaturated fatty acids tops the list. You must also abstain from consuming alcohol, deep-fried food, dairy products, diets rich in sugar, phosphorous, oxalic acids and the ones containing gluten. Exercise is another important factor that can keep this condition at bay. It does help improve your reflexes, stamina and overall strength. If you are diagnosed with joint ailment, you may try simple exercises like walking or any other exercise involving joint movement. Though exercise helps a lot, an arthritis patient must not force the body to perform any vigorous exercise movement. Thus incorporate all these things in routine and stay healthy.
